UN Rwanda Country team commends Rwanda’s leadership on refugee protection.
Friday, 30 August 2024 - The Permanent Secretary, HABINSHUTI Philippe, welcomed the United Nations Rwanda Country Team to the Gashora Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM) this Friday. The visit aimed to observe the support and protection services offered to refugees and asylum seekers at the center.
The UN delegation, led by Resident Coordinator Ozonnia Ojielo, toured various facilities within the Gashora center and engaged with asylum seekers to understand their experiences and the services provided.
During the visit, Ojielo expressed his admiration for Rwanda's leadership in handling refugee issues. Writing in the guest book, he commended President Paul Kagame's role in leading Africa, particularly on matters concerning refugee protection and humanitarian assistance.
"Thank you, president Kagame, for leading Africa. On this issue, we now need to engage the Libyian authorities to end illegal detentions and free all detainees," Ojielo noted, highlighting the need for broader international efforts to address the challenges faced by migrants and asylum seekers in Libya.
Permanent Secretary HABINSHUTI Philippe reiterated Rwanda's commitment to its international obligations and emphasized the country's openness to collaborate with various stakeholders on issues related to displacement and migration.
"The Government of Rwanda is committed to discussing and implementing ideas and solutions with stakeholders on problems related to displacement and migration. We reaffirm our dedication to our international obligations and to ensuring continuous partnership and collaboration with different stakeholders by guaranteeing security, protection, and assistance to refugees, asylum seekers, and other people in need of humanitarian protection," he stated.
Refugees and asylum seekers shared harrowing testimonies of their journeys from their home countries, detailing the violence they endured both on their way to Libya and while in Libya. They expressed their gratitude for being evacuated to Rwanda, where they have found safety and hope.
The visit highlighted the importance of continued international cooperation and the need for sustained efforts to support those affected by conflict and persecution. The Gashora ETM remains a vital hub for refugees and asylum seekers, providing them with essential services and a pathway to safety.
Rwanda currently hosts over 130,000 refugees, reflecting its ongoing commitment to providing refuge and assistance to those in need.
